“The principle goal of education is to create humans who are capable of doing new things, not simply of repeating what other generations have done - humans who are creative, inventive and discoverers.”

Glogster is an educational site for students to create digital posters. This is an example that I made using Glogster about nutrition and being healthy. It teaches my students about Choosing My Plate, the newest version of the food pyramid by the United States Department of Agriculture. Glogster's virtual posters combine pictures, links or embedded text, video, images, and music.

GoAnimate is software that helps the user make movies. Students can be the director of their movie by choosing their own characters, place and script. It is very easy and user friendly to students of all ages; also, students don’t have to be overly creative or a techwiz in order to use it. I would use GoAnimate in a jigsaw lesson; I would put each of my students into groups assign each group a topic to put into the GoAnimate video. Then, have each video be presented to the class to not only show the student’s knowledge but to inform the other students in the class.

ZooBurst books are a less time efficient way of making books; in the past you would need glue, scissors, paper, and many other materials to make a book, and making a pop-up book was nearly impossible! Of course that is still a fun craft but with ZooBurst the book can be created right online and shared too! In class I would use ZooBurst for my students to tell stories, deliver presentations, write reports and express ideas. I would also use this so my students can understand the importance of periods, commas, and other grammatical errors they make.

Chogger is a Comic Strip Creator; it allows the user to pick their own layout using as many boxes as they desire. Chogger is a way for students to show their creativity while keeping organized. Chogger allows students to make their own comics with their own original ideas even if they are not artistic. Chogger uses pictures, captions, word bubbles, and everything else a comic should have. Since it uses word bubbles it also helps students limit to what is important in a story, they cannot have 8 sentences in a word bubble describing something, they need select dialogue to move their story along. I would have my students write a short story in class and then—with Chogger—have them transform it into a comic strip.

Voki is a free program that allows the user to make speaking avatars. The avatars are entirely customized by the user; there are many customization choices such as hair, skin, eyes, clothes, makeup, background, and items. The avatars can be used to greet a classroom, on a webpage, or at the end of an email. I would use Voki for my students to demonstrate their expression through typing skills.

Wordle is used to make “word clouds” from the words you enter. The biggest words are the most common themes and the smaller words are ones that appear in the essay but not as important. Wordle gives the user freedom to be creative by changing the layout and color scheme but it’s mainly reflecting the work of the student. I would use this in class as a requirement for a cover page for a paper; it shows the student and the teacher the message that their paper is giving. If they are writing a paper about Johnny Appleseed and his name is not in huge letters, there is obviously a setback with the paper.

Above is an example of Wordle from a paper I wrote about the evaluation of Teachers in New York.

Blabberize is an application that allows the user to speak through a picture. The user can choose their photo and upload their own sound. Students can manipulate the picture to say what they want it to say; I would use this for students to read their writing for a presentation as an easy way to get them talking in front of the class without really doing it, almost like breaking the ice and making the students feel more comfortable.

Kidspiration and Inspiration are two computer programs. Kidspiration is for use primarily with grades K-2 or 3. Inspiration is best used with third grade and higher grades. Both programs help students see, organize, and develop ideas. Both programs are great for webbing, concept mapping, brainstorming, planning, organizing, and diagramming. Students can see how ideas are related and how they can be grouped.
